I ran across this website. http://www.artyfactory.com/art_appreciation/visual-elements/visual-elements.html It is a great resource for teaching and explaining The Elements of Art. In this lesson, We focused on patterns. I had the students draw something. The drew anything from Bees, Bears, Spiders, Bugs to Stars. It was cool seeing what all they were inspired to draw. Once that was drawn we took kind of a modern Pop Art approach. They took a ruler and drew lines over the original drawing. This separated the composition into smaller triangles. In each one of those they were challenged to use different patterns and different colors. Love this idea!
