colorful vans, colorful buildings, colorful vejigante masks, and unexploded bombs

by karen #1965 3rd grade teacher well i really think you can paint just about anything...and i just love this picture we took in san juan, puerto rico...
now this was one cool van....and the buildings...wow, love the color...i am all about some color...i guess if i had to say the most favorite thing i like about art...it would be color...

when i go on a trip, i plan ahead...i just want to know where to go and what to do...i research through things like trip advisor...http://www.tripadvisor.com/ or yelp http://www.yelp.com/
i love to find little hole in the wall places that represent the colorful places and the colorful people...

using one of these trip planning sites, i found a place we could eat breakfast after we took the colorful van photo...it was called cafeteria mallorca...http://www.nileguide.com/destination/puerto-rico/restaurants/cafeteria-mallorca/400995
i mean yum, yum colorful breakfast...cheap and authentic.

then, we went to a colorful little place...that i found through my research...oh yeah...i love me some trip research...and it was really artsy...the name of it was puerto rico arts and crafts...http://www.puertoricanart-crafts.com/
they had these cool masks...and we bought 4 of these...they were small because mr. o husband makes us take little luggage and we have to pack it all in because we never check our luggage...so these things are called vejigante masks...take a look...oh yeah, more color!
here's a close up look...
...brief history lesson...
vejigantes are part of the puerto rican culture. these comical characters appear in celebrations wearing masks and costumes with wings. they have been used to symbolize different things over the years, from the devil to a resistance to colonialism. the brightly colored vejigante mask consists of a papier mache face and horns.

so, how do you make?

so guessa whatta?...i got a side story for you....so like i said...i love finding these cool places to investigate...so i read somewhere...that you can find amazing snorkeling in culebra if you get off the beaten path..so we went to the grocery store that had chickens running around in it...i kid you not...a lot fresher than zaxbys, chick-fil-a, and kentucky fried chicken...and we get some bread, peanut butter (jif is the best folks...with no peanuts...get the smooth!), and water...so we get all our stuff packed in a backpack and head to the culebra national wildlife refuge...and here is the directions i found somewhere online...you go to the big parking lot...and you go over to the corner of the parking lot...and you start walking...and you walk and follow the path by the dumpster...so we start walking with our loaf of bread, peanut butter, and water in our backpack...and find the dumpster...and head on down the way...and end up in a campground that had 1,457 people in it...and we keep walking and we looked unfortunately out of place...(i think 1,457 was a little exaggerated cause there are only 1,500 people in culebra)...so anyway...we finally get to this open area that looks like fields of peach trees...as we continue to walk, the open road area seems to get less open...then it seems to be getting smaller and smaller with a briar patch even brer rabbit would fear...the family is starting to give me the evil eye...and everyone wants to turn back...but me...I WANTED TO KEEP GOING!...so anyway, i convince them to keep going for at least 45 minutes...and then we stop...
and see this...
so we took a colorful picture...
and hiked back down to a safer area...
and that is the end of my colorful vans, colorful buildings, colorful vejigante masks, and unexploded bombs story...

so...i finally i must end this colorful blog post.........you're the most colorful thing that I've seen, you're the most beautiful thing that I've seen, you are so colorful, you are so colorful, you are the most beautiful thing that i've ever seen (rocca deluca, 2006)...happy march 14, 2010!
